Homework time! Don’t be afraid; it’s optional and easy. My version of CBT homework is this – in between our sessions, you try to pay more attention to your thoughts, feelings, body, or your reactions. Or, homework is trying out new techniques or “tools” to see how well they work for you. Or, it might be reading a handout or watching a short video. You bring back what you’ve noticed, what worked or didn’t, and then we build on it.
One of my clients referred to this process as “Fieldwork”.
Homework gets you engaged in the change process. It increases the effectiveness of our therapy together and results in you needing fewer sessions to reach your goals.
